Construction Valuation Record
The City of Sioux Falls had its third largest year in building construction in 2008 and passed the threshold of $450 million. Sioux Falls had a total construction value of $454,143,347; total construction valuation, which is defined as the quoted or calculated construction valuation for all commercial and residential new buildings, additions, repairs, remodels, and renovations requiring building permits within the city of Sioux Falls. The total construction valuation is indicative of the strong economy and construction climate for both residential and commercial projects within the city of Sioux Falls.
Total construction valuation in 2008 surpassed 2006, which was $441,811,983, by a factor of 2.8 percent and was 1.9 percent below the 2005 construction valuation of $463,105,323.
Other Statistics
Permits issued. The total number of building permits issued in 2008 totaled 6,019, only 6.4 percent below permits issued in 2007, which were 6,428. The number of permits issued in 2008 is significantly lower than the record number of permits, which totaled 7,722 in 2002.
Residential. In addition to the 509 single-family units issued in 2007, there were 72 duplex units, 141 townhome units, and 772 apartment units for a total number of 1,494 permitted dwelling units. The total number of dwelling units permitted decreased from 1,709 in 2007 to 1,494 in 2006, a decrease of 16.9 percent.
The cumulative number of dwelling units issued in 2008 is the lowest number of dwelling units issued in a single year in this decade; but higher than any other year preceding 2000.
Commercial. Leading the increase in construction valuation was the number of commercial projects that were submitted in 2008. There were 40 separate projects were submitted at $1,000,000 or more of construction valuation.
