2007 Building Construction Statistics

Construction Valuation Record

The City of Sioux Falls had a record year in building construction in 2007 and passed the threshold of $500 million for the first time. Sioux Falls set a new record in 2007 for total construction valuation, which is defined as the quoted or calculated construction valuation for all commercial and residential new buildings, additions, repairs, remodels, and renovations requiring building permits within the city of Sioux Falls. The total construction valuation of $523,125,775 is indicative of the strong economy and construction climate for both residential and commercial projects within the city of Sioux Falls.

Total construction valuation in 2007 surpassed 2006, which was $441,811,983, by a factor of 18 percent and exceeded the previous construction valuation record of $463,105,323 set in 2005.

Other Statistics

Permits issued. The total number of building permits issued in 2007 totaled 6,428, only 0.1 percent above permits issued in 2006, which was 6,419. The number of permits issued in 2007 is significantly lower than the record number of permits, which totaled 7,722 in 2002.

Residential. In addition to the 889 single-family units issued in 2007, there were 108 duplex units, 196 townhome units, and 516 apartment units for a total number of 1,709 permitted dwelling units. The total number of dwelling units permitted increased from 1,568 in 2006 to 1,709 in 2007, an increase of 10.8 percent.

The cumulative number of dwelling units issued in 2007 is the third highest number of dwelling units issued in a single year.

Commercial. Leading the increase in construction valuation was the number of commercial projects that were submitted in 2007. There were 127 projects that were issued above the $500,000 valuation; of those, 67 separate projects were submitted at $1,000,000 or more of construction valuation.

*University Center was submitted for plan review but is a State exempted project.
