Mayor Huether's Listening & Learning Session

Mayor Huether holds weekly "Listening & Learning" Sessions each Saturday where the public is invited to come and hear about the current programs and projects in the City of Sioux Falls and interact with the Mayor and City Directors on issues of any type.

Mary Johns, Director of Siouxland Libraries, provided an update on the planning process and features of the new Siouxland Libraries Westside Branch. The new branch is planned to open in the summer of 2013 in Memorial Park.

    Program Description: Sue Quanbeck Etten, Director of Central Services, provided an update on the initiatives the City is working on to help centralize certain government functions and improve the productivity as well. She also discussed CityLink Channel 16 programming. City Councilor Michelle Erpenbach also attended and answered various questions from the public on a variety of topics.

    Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether discussed issues important to the citizens of Sioux Falls. Some topics in this session include what the rising cost of gasoline is doing to the City budget, an update on the happenings at multicultural center, development of the old stockyard site, and the proposed events center

    Bill O’Toole, Director of Human Resources, and Jane Hannestad, Human Resources Manager, reviewed and discussed the City’s hiring process for civil service positions including Police Officer, Firefighter, and general employee positions. Mayor Mike Huether also fielded various questions from the public on topics including workforce diversity, public transportation improvements, and a potential events center.

Some topics included in this session was potential spring flooding in Sioux Falls, an update of the 2010/2011 City budget, a discussion of sewer pipeline improvements taking place this year, and the proposed events center.

    City Councilors Vernon Brown and Michelle Erpenbach discussed the nomination and election process the Council will use to fill the open northwest district seat previously held by Bob Litz who was elected Minnehaha County Auditor. Anyone interested in filling the term through May 2012 is encouraged to attend. The Councilors also discussed other issues citizens brought forward; including neighborhoods, street repairs and the events center discussion.

    Jill Franken, Public Health Director, gave an update on the proposed changes to the Family Day Care Home Ordinance and upcoming day care inspection resources for parents. In addition, February is National School-Based Health Awareness Month. The history and accomplishments of the Health Department's partnership with the Sioux Falls School District to provide primary health care within Hawthorne and Terry Redlin Elementary schools, was shared. Mayor Huether was also be in attendance and discussed topics including the locations a proposed events center.

  • February 12, 2011 - With Parks and Recreation Director Don Kearney
    Don Kearney, Director of Parks and Recreation, gave an updates on the Recreation Needs Assessment Project, a summary of the duties and responsibilities performed by department staff in the winter months, a recap of the 2010 capital projects that improved existing park infrastructure, and plans for west side bike trail improvements. Mayor Huether also discussed topics involving the city of Sioux Falls, including snow removal, a proposed events center, and business recruitment.

  • February 5, 2011 - With Fire Chief Donn Hill
    Fire Chief Donn Hill discussed Sioux Falls Fire Rescue’s plans for 2011 and beyond. City Councilor Bob Litz was also in attendance talking about current events in Sioux Falls, including snow removal and ideas surrounding a potential events center in Sioux Falls.
