On December 4, 2011, a participant at the Weekend Open Gym program at Morningside Community Center experienced a cardiac arrest. Fortunately for this young man, the Community Center Recreation Leaders, Trey Bren and Kelsey Remund, were able to respond immediately and appropriately with the Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) and administration of CPR.

On November 1, 2011, the City of Sioux Falls announced the awarding of the development proposal submitted by CR Lloyd Associates for redevelopment of City-owned property on the east bank of downtown Sioux Falls, unofficially known as the “River Ramp redevelopment site.” The development team, consisting of Paul Hegg from Hegg Companies, Craig Lloyd from Lloyd Companies, and Al Schoeneman, proposes to construct a 100-plus-room Hilton Garden Inn at the site. The hotel will include conference space, a restaurant, possibly retail, and incorporate unique downtown features. This project serves as a catalyst for removal of the 50-year-old River Ramp. Not only will removal of the ramp provide an opportunity for this development to proceed, it will also give the City an opportunity to move forward with its own commitment to improving the downtown river greenway. Phase II of the greenway project begins in 2012 with removal of the ramp. The greenway project will be constructed simultaneously with the hotel development.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation and the Engineering Division of Public Works hosted a public open house to discuss the 60th Street North Corridor Planning and Feasibility Study on February 17, 2011. The limits of the study are from Interstate 29 to Timberline Road (future SD 100). The 60th Street North Corridor Study will review future roadway geometrics, future land uses, safety needs, and the feasibility of grade-separated structures.

On October 21, 2010, U.S. Senator Tim Johnson met with local officials to discuss the improvements that have been made at the Sioux Falls Police Department and Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office because of Recovery Act funding. Area leaders highlighted the more than $2.7 million Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County have received to hire officers and to purchase new equipment. Johnson was joined at the event by Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether, Sioux Falls Police Chief Doug Barthel, Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead, and Minnehaha County States Attorney Aaron McGowan.

A Bike Smart outdoor event was held September 14, 2010, at City Hall. This event unveiled the installation of artist-designed bike racks throughout Sioux Falls. These artist-created bike racks beautify our city with visual art and provide parking for bicycles.

Mayor Mike Huether announced that Erica Beck and Brent O'Neil will be transferred from Planning and Building Services to Community Development/ Public Parking. Beck will serve as Community Development Manager under department director Darrin Smith. She will be focusing on issues involving community development, neighborhood conservation, downtown development, and other related economic development initiatives. O’Neil will continue to serve as an Urban Planner in Community Development/ Public Parking under Beck’s supervision.
