New Firefighter Hiring Process

  • Position advertised by Human Resources.
  • Application must be completed by applicant within the window of time advertised by Human Resources.
  • Written civil service test administered.
  • Applicant must have a passing score on the written exam to progress.
  • CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) administered. Applicant must pass the CPAT in order to progress to the B-PAD.
  • B-PAD (Behavioral Personnel Assessment Device) test administered.
  • Applicant must have a passing score on the B-PAD test in order to progress.
  • Oral interview(s) conducted.
  • Conditional job offered by Human Resources to candidates based on their final ranking after the civil service test, CPAT, B-PAD test, and oral interview.
  • Conditional job offers will be made by Human Resources based on available positions.
  • Psychological exam administered to candidates who received a conditional job offer.
  • Background check completed.
  • After a successful progression through the above exams, a medical exam is conducted by a licensed physician.
  • A job offer is made by Human Resources to the applicants in order of their rank after all of the tests are completed successfully.
  • All applicants who are selected for hiring must successfully complete a recruit training program at the Fire Department Training Academy. The Recruit Academy lasts eight weeks. Those who successfully complete the recruit training program are placed in the field as probationary firefighters for the remainder of their 12-month probationary period. During the probationary period, an on-going structured training program will be provided, along with monthly performance evaluations.
