Larvicides

This is an example of a larvicide product that can be used by a homeowner for mosquito control. Larvacides work by stopping the mosquito larvae from reaching adulthood. Some larvacide products on the market contain Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (B.t.i.). This is a type of bacterium that is toxic to mosquito larvae as well as certain other types of fly larvae. Other larvacide products may contain other growth inhibitor products.

Methoprene is a General Use Pesticide that is still considered to be of very low toxicity when used properly. Methoprene mimics the action of an insect growth regulation hormone and interferes with the normal maturation process. Larvacide type products provide excellent mosquito control for homeowners and are appropriate for use in bird baths, urns, old tires, rain barrels, flower pots, roof gutters, tree holes, water gardens, unused swimming pools, ornamental fountains, pool covers or any other water holding receptacles where water remains unchanged for a period of a few days, thereby giving mosquitoes an opportunity to lay eggs and reach adulthood.

They can generally be obtained through stores that carry home improvement products or most hardware stores.
