
Mayor Dave Munson is a lifetime resident of Sioux Falls. Born and raised in the north end, he attended Sioux Falls public schools. Dave continued to advance his education by earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Sioux Falls and his master's degree from Augustana College.
Dave was elected Mayor of Sioux Falls in 2002 and reelected in 2006. Prior to his election as Mayor, Dave served 24 years in the South Dakota State Legislature in both the house and the senate, and was appointed to serve as chair and vice chair of several committees. Most recently, Dave was chair of the Senate Commerce Committee and also served as a member of the Senate Education Committee and Senate Committee on State Affairs in the 2002 South Dakota Legislative Session.
In the positions he has held throughout his career, Dave has combined his love of public service as well as private interests. He was a teacher and coach in the Sioux Falls school system, a local independent insurance agent, and was employed for 18 years with Citibank South Dakota, most recently holding the position of executive director of CitiHousing, Inc.
Dave was awarded the Dr. A. O. Larsen Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Sioux Falls. Dave was honored with this distinction for his outstanding contributions, leadership, and service to community.
Dave has also been fortunate to have served on many community and state boards and has volunteered for various community events.
Dave and his wife Linda have three sons: Steve (Rhonda), Paul, and John (Caroline) as well as a granddaughter, Eliana.
