Charter Revision Commission

The fifth Sioux Falls Charter Revision Commission, recently appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council, will be conducting public meetings though January 2012 to assist them in preparing a report for the Mayor and City Council pertaining to suggested revisions of the City’s Charter, the governing document for the conduct of Sioux Falls government.

Any changes to the Charter, as proposed by the Charter Revision Commission, may be presented in the form of Charter Amendments to city voters in April 2012. Previously, city voters have approved proposed charter revisions in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2010.

There will be a designated amount of time at each meeting for public input and comment. Written comments or input will also be received by the Commission directly by sending them to the Sioux Falls City Attorney’s Office, Attention: Charter Revision Commission, at 224 West Ninth Street, P.O. Box 7402, Sioux Falls, SD 57117-7402, or by emailing them to charterrevisioncomments@siouxfalls.org through December 31, 2011. Note: Submission of written comments at least three working days prior to a meeting is not required but is strongly encouraged if the person submitting such comments or input has an interest in formally getting on the agenda before the Commission.

The meetings will be available to watch online via live streaming video and through an archive available on-demand on the website. The meetings will also be rebroadcast on cable channel CityLink 16 on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. and Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. during the weeks that the live meetings are held.

By mid-January 2012, the Commission will make a draft final report, likely to include an executive summary, which will be available to the public at the City Clerk’s Office in Carnegie Town Hall or in City Hall at the City Attorney’s Office as well as being viewable at the City’s website. The Commission is tentatively planning to adopt a final report and present it to the City Council by the end of January 2012.
