In December, 2000, a task force committee met with a current petitioner to discuss their needs and concerns regarding medical waste treatment. They expressed that they are also proposing to do some form of recycling of this waste product.
In January, 2001 the committee met with local hospital representatives to discuss their needs and concerns regarding this issue. It was noted at this meeting that the majority of the medical waste byproduct will be transferred and disposed of at the City Landfill. This byproduct should be classified as regulated medical waste and not raise any environmental, health or safety concerns to the City. Disposal fees will be based upon the existing tiered system.
The task force committee’s direction was to go forward with ordinance changes to allow Regulated Medical Waste Treatment Facilities within Sioux Falls city limits.
City Council approved an ordinance in August 2001.
