On October 15, 2007, at approximately 3:44 p.m., Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a reported structure fire at 5903 West Wren Place.
First arriving units reported smoke and flames coming from the back of the structure, a mobile home. When firefighters arrived they were notified by a neighbor that the resident was possibly in the home. Firefighters entered the home and found a victim on the living room floor. The victim was deceased when firefighters removed him from the mobile home.
Firefighters reentered the home and extinguished the fire found in the rear bedroom. The cause of the fire was a space heater that was left on in the bedroom. The house did not have a fire sprinkler system.
Sioux Fall Fire Rescue would like to remind people that when using space heaters to keep three feet of clearance around the heater, and to turn it off when leaving the room. Also ensure that your smoke detectors are working.
Four fire trucks and 2 support vehicles responded to the fire, with 22 personnel on scene. The Red Cross also responded to support crews at the scene. One firefighter was injured at the fire.
