World Renowned Firefighter Combat Challenge Coming to Sioux Falls, South Dakota May 30 - 31, 2008
What: The Midwest Championship Hy-Vee Firefighter Combat Challenge sponsored by the Argus Leader
When: Friday, May 30, beginning at 2 p.m. and Saturday, May 31, beginning at 9 a.m.
Where: Sioux Falls Arena
Who: The Firefighter Combat Challenge brings together hundreds of firefighters from throughout the nation to compete in what is known as “the toughest two minutes in sports.” The five-event obstacle course tests firefighters’ fitness level, agility, and heart! This event celebrates the excellence of America’s beloved heroes.
Background: The FCC showcases the best and bravest in the firefighting profession each year. Annually, the competition brings together more than 3,000 firefighters from over 600 U.S. and municipal fire departments to battle it out for challenge superiority. The competition requires that firefighters wear full bunker gear and a Scott Air-Pak SCBA while completing a rigorous course comprised of five events: five-story stair climb with 45-pound hose, hose hoist, forcible entry/Keiser Force Machine, hose advance, and victim rescue. Each event represents a job task specific to firefighting and truly tests each firefighter’s resilience and agility.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is the fifth stop on the twenty-two city national tour of 2008.
In addition, the FREE Kids Firefighter Challenge will be part of the event. This event affords children ages 4–12 the opportunity to live out the dream every child has of being a firefighter through a scaled-down version of the actual FCC course. Participants get a small taste of what it’s like to be a firefighter with the hose drag, inflatable tower and slide, and a multitude of other kid favorites.
Other notable events include a seminar conducted by two-time FCC World Champion Brandon Cunningham. The Challenge will also feature the East-West Competition between the Sioux Falls and Rapids City Fire Departments. Another enjoyable event taking place is the Midwest Ribfest, which will be held outside of the arena.
