Title: Building Services Receives ADA Recognition Award

The City of Sioux Falls Building Services Division has received the 2009 ADA Celebration Recognition Award by the Sioux Falls ADA Celebration Committee.

The Awards Committee considered four employers and chose Building Services as the award recipient. A plaque was presented to the Building Services staff at the 2009 ADA Celebration Event on Thursday, July 23, 2009.

In nominating Building Services for the award, Ryan Green said:

“For several years Building Services has been collaborating with disability organizations (PVA and the Prairie Freedom Center) in Sioux Falls to seek our input on some of the new buildings and facilities that are being built in the greater Sioux Falls area. I personally work with Ron Bell and other Building Services staff on a weekly basis looking through blueprints and building plans to make sure that they meet or even exceed what is required under the ADA guidelines. Granted, it is required of Building Services to make sure that new construction is accessible, but in Sioux Falls these folks pay particular attention to it and continuously seek input from the community to make sure they get it done right. Furthermore, Ron Bell was able to use his position as Chief Building Code Official of Sioux Falls to help pass a statewide building code for the state of South Dakota. Before Ron’s work on getting this building code passed, South Dakota was one of only a handful of states that did not have a mandatory statewide building code. Through the passage of this building code, now all communities in South Dakota will have to pay particular attention in making sure their new construction projects are safe, sound, and accessible to all people with disabilities.”

For the fifth year, the Sioux Falls ADA Celebration Committee has recognized a business who has demonstrated a commitment to breaking down barriers for people with disabilities.
