The Sioux Falls Health Department wants to remind citizens that due to recent rains, there may be increases in mosquito habitats.
The Vector Control Program has been actively monitoring habitats throughout Sioux Falls and will continue to treat areas in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local response guidelines.
As in the past, neighborhood sprays will begin when mosquito trap data indicates threshold numbers are being met as well as in response to identified cases of West Nile. Notification of all spray events will be posted on the City’s website at www.siouxfalls.org. and will also be released through media channels.
The following precautions should be followed to prevent mosquito bites and reduce the risk of West Nile Virus:
- Use mosquito repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
- Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and a long sleeved shirt to limit exposure to mosquitoes.
- Limit time outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
- Eliminate standing water that gives mosquitoes a place to breed.
- Support local mosquito control efforts.
Personal precautions are particularly important for the elderly, pregnant women, and transplant patients.
Citizens wanting to report local concerns on standing water or potential habitat concerns should leave the required information on the automated Mosquito Reporting Hotline at 605 367 8799. |
