A 1987 Chevy Blazer being driven by Matthew S. Merritt, age 28, of Sioux Falls was travelling northbound on Spring Avenue, approaching the stop sign with 22nd Street.

At the same time a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee being driven by a Sioux Falls woman was travelling eastbound on 22nd Street, approaching the intersection with Spring Avenue. The Grand Cherokee had the right-of-way.

Matthew S. Merritt drove through the stop sign at a high rate of speed and struck the passenger side of the Grand Cherokee, which rolled over and came to rest on its wheels on the northeast corner of the intersection. The driver of the Grand Cherokee was transported to Sanford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Matthew S. Merritt was arrested and lodged for possession of marijuana, stop sign violation, and no seatbelt. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
