On August 18, 2010, at 5:38 p.m., members of the Sioux Falls Police, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, and Rural/Metro Ambulance were dispatched to 57th Street and Galway Avenue reference a vehicle versus bicycle crash. A S.D. State Trooper in the area also responded to the scene to assist.

The preliminary investigation shows the driver of a 2010 Chevy Silverado pickup was eastbound on 57th Street when he suddenly swerved to the left and struck the victim, who was riding his bicycle westbound against the north curb line. The pickup continued in a northeasterly direction and came to rest in a water retention pond. After being struck, the victim came to rest on the north side of the sidewalk.

First aid was administered to the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His identification will be released pending notification of next of kin. The victim was a Sioux Falls resident.

The driver of the pickup was identified as 42-year-old David Bendt of Sioux Falls, who was transported to Avera McKennan Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. He was then transported to the Minnehaha County Jail and lodged for DWI 1st and vehicular homicide.

Update:

The victim from last night’s fatal pickup versus bicycle crash has been identified as, 49-year-old, Kevin Lee Rogers of Sioux Falls, SD. His DOB is October 16, 1960.

The driver of the 2010 Chevy pickup was, 42-year-old, David Julius Bendt, also of Sioux Falls, SD. His DOB is October 1, 1967.

The investigation is continuing.
