On Saturday morning, August 28, 2010, 57th Street from Minnesota Avenue to Pennbrook Avenue will be opened to traffic, marking the substantial completion of the 57th Street Reconstruction Project.
A summer construction season with multiple severe rainstorms caused delays on the project and postponed the completion by two weeks. Public Works worked with the contractor, T & R Contracting, to minimize the delay and open the street for the 14,000 vehicles that use it daily.
Once reopened, drivers will notice the street has been widened to add a continuous center turn lane and a dedicated right turn lane at Minnesota Avenue. The sight distance for turning vehicles at Heatherwood Circle and Wildwood Circle has been increased from less than 250 feet to 475 feet, making the roadway safer for the traveling public.
Periodic lane closures will be in place next week to allow the contractor to complete landscaping along 57th Street.
Public Works would like to thank commuters and residents adjacent to the project for their patience as we complete the work on 57th Street during this challenging project.
