As part of the implementation of the Sioux Falls Bicycle Plan, the City of Sioux Falls will begin a pilot project to determine the effectiveness of two different types of on-street bicycle facilities. We encourage all citizens to try these on-street bicycle facilities and provide your comments by e-mailing to strebilcock@siouxfalls.org.
Shared Parking and Bicycle Lanes
In May of this year, on-street shared parking and bicycle lanes have been painted on the following three city streets.
- Bahnson Avenue from 12th to 26th Streets and from 33rd to 49th Streets
- West 32nd Streets from Marion Road to Sertoma Avenue
- Ralph Rogers Road from Minnesota Avenue to 69th Street
Sharrow
This summer, on-street sharrows will be painted on the following three city streets. Sharrows are lanes which the actual travel lane of the street and bicycle lane are shared. This facility has worked in other parts of the country – especially where parking is fairly heavy along the street.
- Dakota Avenue in downtown area
- Main Avenue in downtown area
- 22nd Street from Phillips Avenue to Kiwanis Avenue.
Bicycle Lanes
Next year, bicycle lanes will be placed in locations where parking is able to be restricted. These facilities require 5-feet of dedicated space only for bicycles.
