Crime Prevention Unit
The officers in the Crime Prevention Unit continue to have many duties. Their primary task is educating the public on how to avoid becoming a victim of crime. This goal is accomplished by providing hundreds of presentations to the public throughout the year. The officers are also responsible for assisting businesses in development of safety and security policy and procedures.
The officers manage almost 100 Neighborhood Watch Groups, 200 properties in the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program, and they assist in the development of other crime prevention projects and/or programs. This unit oversees the Law Enforcement Center’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). The work provided by these generous volunteers free up officers for other critical patrol duties.
The volunteer program began February 14, 2005, and has provided 7,542.53 hours of service, saving the City over $101,069.90! Crime Prevention Officers also assist in all aspects of training throughout the department and the state. They also assist the Police Department as members of many committees and boards throughout the city.
