Fleet Maintenance

The Sioux Falls Police Department’s Fleet Maintenance Section is staffed by Darwin Plucker and Bob Dafoe. This staff of two has the key responsibility of maintaining and ensuring the fleet of vehicles and trailers assigned to the Police Department remain in operating condition and are available for service seven days a week.

The Fleet Maintenance Section is located in a new facility providing for an improved and efficient work environment in which to work on the 120 vehicles currently in the Police Department’s inventory. The marked vehicles and administrative vehicles run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Police Department’s fleet is comprised of the following:

  • Marked Vehicles 65
  • Unmarked Vehicles 36
  • Harley-Davidson Motorcycles 7
  • Trailers 1
  • 4WD All-Terrain Vehicle 1
  • Mobile Command Unit 1
  • SWAT Response Unit 1
  • Animal Control Vehicles 6
  • Smart Speed Trailers 3

The Fleet Maintenance staff is responsible for preparing and equipping new marked vehicles and upgrading older marked vehicles. These tasks would include transferring radios, mobile computer systems, in-car video camera systems, light bars, sirens, prisoner seats, and exterior graphics.

During the winter months the Fleet Maintenance staff is responsible for snow removal from the parking lots as well as the entrances and exits from the garage, thereby facilitating the normal day-to-day operation of the department’s personnel. During inclement weather, Fleet Maintenance staff installs tire chains on all marked patrol vehicles to enable patrol personnel to respond to calls for service.
