Patrol Division

The Sioux Falls Police Department Patrol shifts are divided into three time periods: Shift 1 (6 a.m. to 2 p.m.), Shift 2 (2 p.m. to 10 p.m.), and Shift 3 (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.). Our officers begin their shift with a roll call meeting. They then inspect their patrol vehicles and attend to their assigned districts/quadrants of the city. Officers enforce traffic regulations, respond to “calls for service,” and investigate misdemeanor crimes. They are usually the first at the site of any incident.

The Sioux Falls Police Department uses the Quadrant Management System for patrol in the Patrol Division. A Sergeant and his or her team are assigned to each of Sioux Falls’ four quadrants. This system helps the officers familiarize themselves with city streets, occupants of residential/commercial neighborhoods, and general surroundings. It brings about a connection between the officers and the general public, it helps problem solving, and it efficiently delivers community service. Each team is given the freedom to identify problems within their quadrant, find solutions to those problems, and implement plans to solve those problems. Sergeants meet with their team of officers on a regular basis to discuss these problems and find ways to better improve the police presence in their area. The team policing concept is expected to increase our performance in several areas.

Community policing has been and will continue to be a priority of the Sioux Falls Police Department. We have assigned officers to permanent quadrants so that they can work with the citizens in that area to provide the best police service. These officers are familiar with the people in the quadrant and can address ongoing problems, recognize new problems, and give the citizens an officer, which they know by name, that they could turn to when needed.
