Not only is identity theft one of the easiest crimes to perpetrate, it is also one of the hardest to detect and ultimately get “cleared up”. Once your personal information is in the criminal hand, it can effect your finances, insurance, property, basic services like phone and cable and of course your credit rating.
A good rule of thumb we’ve all heard before is still the best advice to follow. NEVER give your personal information out over the phone or through the internet. There will be occasions were you will be required to supply that information, but make sure you do it in person and with an institution or business that you know is reputable.
In the event of a wallet being lost or stolen, contact law enforcement immediately. Then notify your banking and credit card providers, Social Security Administration, Drivers License bureau and any other organization that you feel needs to know about the loss or theft. They will all be able to guide you in the steps that need to be taken to start the recovery process.
