PERSONAL SAFETY TIPS

  • While walking or jogging, be aware of your surroundings.  Look alert and show confidence.
  • Be vocal, shout or scream if someone tries to attack or abduct you.  Bring attention to yourself.  Try to stay where you are.
  • Have a plan and know what you are going to do if you are attacked.  Be psychologically prepared.
  • If something doesn’t feel right then go with your intuition.
  • When dealing with suspicious people, try to put some distance between you and the person or get an object between you and the person.
  • Every situation will be different.  Depend on your own capabilities and consider the capabilities of the attacker.
  • When driving and you believe a vehicle is following you, drive to a public place that is well lit.  If there is time, get out of your vehicle and go into the public place.  If there is not time, make sure your car doors are locked and honk the vehicles horn.
  • If you are walking and you believe someone is following you, turn and look at the person so they know you are aware of them.  Walk or run to a public place.
  • If possible, walk, jog or shop with a friend.
  • Be careful not to reveal money or credit cards in your purse or wallet.
  • Don’t leave purses or wallets unattended in vehicles.  Don’t hang purses on the back of restroom doors or leave purses unattended in shopping carts.  Carry you keys separate from your purse in case of theft or the purse is lost.
  • While driving, always have your car doors locked.  Always visually check around and in your vehicle before you get into it.
  • If someone tries to break into your vehicle while you are in it, honk the horn or attempt to drive or back away.
  • Don’t leave packages in your vehicle unattended.  Cover them up or put them in your vehicle trunk.
  • Put as little information on your check blanks as your bank will allow.  This will make it harder for someone attempting to forge your checks.
  • When your vehicle is being serviced, try not to leave any keys with the vehicle other then those needed.
  • Do not give out personal information over the internet or chat rooms.
  • Do not give out financial information over the phone or internet unless you are speaking to someone that you have contacted.
