The traffic group of the Engineering Division is responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the City’s traffic signal system, traffic control and guidance signs, and all pavement markings.
Traffic Engineering also operates the City’s Traffic Counting Program, Traffic Accident Analysis Program, and performs traffic studies.
Traffic on municipal roads, streets, and sidewalks is governed by a series of municipally, enforceable bylaws and the Highway Traffic Act. Traffic signals and signs, pavement markings, and warning devices recommended in the Provincial manuals of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, are used to alert the traveling public.
Traffic studies, through collection of data from computerized traffic count equipment, radar equipment, manual counts, and field observations are conducted to determine the need for all-way stops, traffic signals, railway protection, adult crossing guards, speed zones, and parking areas.
