Abandoned and Closed Landfills

The City of Sioux Falls is aware of at least eighteen closed rubble sites, garbage dump sites, and landfills that are no longer in use in our community. These sites have been privately and publicly owned. They have also been privately or publicly operated.

The real property from these former solid waste disposal sites may be complicated by the presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. It is not uncommon for these sites to have been abandoned and underutilized.

Proper assessment, remediation, and engineering controls have been successfully used to allow creative alternative uses for some of these properties through redevelopment.
