What is the Household Hazardous Waste Facility?
The Household Hazardous Waste Facility, or HHW Facility, is a permanent location that provides for the reuse of paints and other household products and acts as a central point of collection for household hazardous wastes in Sioux Falls. It serves the five county region also served by the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill (Minnehaha, Lincoln, Turner, Lake and McCook Counties).
The HHWF is designed as a drive through collection center where vehicles enter a covered drive-up area. A City staff person will check for residency in the five-county region and record the customer's address. An on-site contractor will screen wastes and unload vehicles. Materials will be accepted and sorted by the contractor into reuse and hazard categories.
The 90 feet X 60 feet (5,400 square feet) building includes areas for the handling and storage of different types of household hazardous waste, a reuse area for the public to obtain materials that have been brought in, and office space for the City’s Sustainability Program. The cost of the facility was just over $1 million and was constructed and is operated with Landfill user fees. The HHW Facility uses a heating system that will utilize waste oil as a fuel.
What is the Reuse Room?
The reuse room is an area for residents of the five county region also served by the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill (Minnehaha, Lincoln, Turner, Lake and McCook Counties) to take products brought into the facility for free that are in a usable condition. The facility redistributes only household cleaners, paints, etc. and does not have electronics available for the taking. Staff is unable to guarantee the quality of the products, but each item is inspected before making it available to the public. The hours of operation are the same as those of the rest of the HHW Facility and can be found under the contact information in the column to the right.
