- Cliff Avenue: 60th Street North to 72nd Street North [+]
This arterial street was planned to undergo an asphalt overlay this summer in conjunction with the South Dakota Department of Transportation's Interstate 90 and Interstate 229 reconstruction project. However, due to the recent STIP/TIP programming changes, this project has now been put on hold. The SDDOT is planning on programming this project back into the five year program therefore an asphalt overlay will not be performed.
- Interstate 90 and Interstate 229 [+]
The South Dakota Department of Transportation will be reconstructing all ramps at the Interstate 90 and 229 systems interchange and the northbound and southbound lanes on I229 this summer. On April 29, the project started. The northbound lanes were closed to traffic on I229 and are now completely repaved and open to traffic. Currently, the eastbound to southbound I229 ramp is closed. The westbound to southbound I90 ramp remains open to drivers. The contractor is working on preparing the southbound lanes for paving. Drivers should expect to be detoured to Benson Road and Cliff Avenue at various times of the project. The overall completion of the project is expected in late September.
- Rice Street and Interstate 229 Intersection [+]
The South Dakota Department of Transportation will be installing traffic signals and turn lanes for the southbound on/off ramps at Rice Street and Interstate 229. This will include a new traffic signal, minor concrete work, and pavement marking at the intersection. This project has been deferred to 2010 because of right of way negotiations.
- Bike Trail Extension to Great Bear [+]
The City of Sioux Falls has received federal funding to extend the bike trail from Falls Park out to Great Bear Recreation Area. This project will be constructed in phases with the first phase extending from the spillway over to Cliff Avenue. The project will begin later this year pending successful land negotiations.
- Rail Yard Relocation Project [+]
The City of Sioux Falls has received federal money to relocate the rail yard from the Downtown Area to a location near the Rice Street and Timberline Avenue intersection. Currently this project is in the environmental assessment documentation phase. Final design is anticipated to begin in early 2010. Construction may start in mid to late 2010 pending all of the necessary land and environmental documentation approvals are obtained.
- 41st Street: SD100 to Six Mile Road [+]
This arterial street was a gravel road last year and improvements were needed to serve new development on the east side of the City. Last year, the grading and utilities were installed and this year the street will be paved from SD 100 to Six Mile Road. Work will include grading, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, curb and gutter, sidewalk, concrete surfacing, and street lighting on East 41st Street from Highway 11 to Six Mile Road. The contractor is finishing all grading work in preparation for asphalt surfacing. Through-traffic will be detoured to 26th Street via Highway 11 and Six Mile Road. The final completion date for this project is August 28, 2009.
- Eastside Sanitary Sewer Expansion [+]
The City of Sioux Falls continues to expand sanitary sewer on the east side to allow for future residential and commercial development. The next phase of the Eastside Sanitary Sewer project is Basin 20 and will service the property along east 41st Street out to the Big Sioux River. This project is currently under design and property owner negotiations are continuing. The project may begin later this year.
- 69th Street and Southeastern Avenue [+]
The two arterials of Southeastern Avenue and 69th Street are currently rural gravel roads. Over the next two years, the City will be constructing urban improvements on Southeastern Avenue from Chatham Street to 1/4 mile south of 69th Street and on 69th Street from Charger Avenue to 1/4 mile east of Southeastern Avenue. Both street improvements have unique features to be constructed. A railroad overpass will be constructed on 69th Street (similar to the newly constructed 57th Street overpass) to allow for improved vehicle and pedestrians crossing the rail tracks. 69th Street will be constructed as a four lane section with a landscaped median and sidewalks. On Southeastern Avenue, four lanes with a median are also planned to be constructed. In addition, a new multi-lane roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of 69th Street and Southeastern Avenue. Roundabouts provide for a safer more efficient movement of traffic versus a traffic signal. For more information on roundabouts, please see the Public Works website. These projects are currently under design and may start in 2010, pending available funding.
- 69th Street: Connie Avenue to Tallgrass Avenue [+]
This arterial street currently exists as a three lane urban street and also a rural gravel road. The project design includes only public utilities installation in 2009. This project final paving and widening is undetermined at this time however, will be coordinated with the new Solberg Avenue Overpass design and construction proposed for late 2010. Access to the Heart Hospital and surrounding buildings will be maintained throughout the utility project. The utility installation will begin in late August.
- 49th Street: Minnesota Avenue to Duluth Avenue [+]
The 41st Street Corridor Study conducted in 2000 identified the 49th Street Extension from Minnesota Avenue to Western Avenue as a top priority to provide an alternate route for commuters. The City has been actively working with property owners to acquire the right of way necessary to construct the street. This first phase of the project is currently under design and will be constructed as the property is acquired and funding is available. The ultimate section will be a four lane with a landscaped median and sidewalks. This project is currently on hold for funding purposes.
- Western Heights Water Main Replacement [+]
Corrosive soils have caused the need to remove and replace water main in the southwest part of the City. This is a multi year project that will improve water service to the neighborhood, reduce maintenance, and enhance our distribution system. The streets that will be impacted this year are 61st Street, Cheyenne Drive, Cheyenne Court, and 52nd Street. These streets will be totally closed to traffic and there may be times when residents will not be able to park in their driveways. The project has started with pavement removals and watermain installation.
- Sertoma Avenue: 12th Street to 26th Street [+]
This street has experienced a substantial increase in traffic volumes due to the area schools and residential housing growth. Sertoma Avenue will be widened and constructed as a four lane urban street with turn lanes at the major intersections. Street lighting and sidewalks will also be installed along the corridor. The project continues with utility installation and street grading along the entire corridor. The contractor is also working near the intersection 12th and Sertoma. The entire corridor of Sertoma Avenue from 12th to 26th Street is closed off to traffic. A four way stop sign has been installed at 26th Street and Tea/Ellis Road and a traffic signal has been installed at 12th Street and the Tea/Ellis Road to facilitate detour traffic. This project will be substantially completed by November.
- Maple Street: Career Avenue to Marion Road [+]
This east/west arterial street has experienced a significant increase in traffic volumes over the past five years and additional capacity is needed. This street will be widened to a four lane with landscaped median section, including street lighting and sidewalks. This street will also serve a new collector street west of Marion Road that will provide access to a new elementary school, fire station, and park. This project is currently under design and will be constructed in 2010, pending available funding.
- Benson Road: Interstate 29 to Career Avenue [+]
Business growth in this area with large volumes of employees has prompted the need to improve and widen the current two lane asphalt rural section street to be reconstructed and widened to a four lane asphalt street with street lighting and sidewalks. The project continues with grading and utility installation. Benson Road is closed to traffic. The intersection of Career Avenue will remain open to traffic at this time, however, will be closed in late September. Traffic will detoured to 60th Street North. Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes.
- Interstate 90 and Marion Road Interchange [+]
The City of Sioux Falls and South Dakota Department of Transportation are working together to construct a new interchange at Marion Road and I90. Marion Road from 60th Street North to I90 will also be improved to an urban street with the interchange project. This project has been delayed until 2010 due to right of way negotiations.
- Basin 13 Sanitary Sewer Improvements [+]
This sanitary sewer project will install new pipe in the northwest part of the City to allow for growth and development. This project will construct the pipe adjacent to Career Avenue and will not impact traffic along Career Avenue. This project is currently under design and will begin later this summer.
- SDDOT Interchange Bridges Rehabilitation [+]
This South Dakota Department of Transportation project will rehabilitate existing interchange bridge decks this summer. Various closures will be experienced throughout the summer associated with these improvements. 60th Street North is completed and 41st Street work in currently underway. 41st eastbound to northbound I29 ramp is closed and also westbound to southbound ramp is closed. 41st Street will remain open to through traffic but delays should be expected. Drivers are detoured to 26th Street and I29. Future closures will be on Russell Street and on 49th Street which closures will be approximately 2-3 weeks for each location. The overall completion of the project should be early this fall.
- Industrial Avenue Water Main Improvements [+]
Water main in the Airport Addition was installed in the 1950's. The City has had numerous pipe breaks in the area and is planning on a phased replacement program. This project is complete.
- Asphalt Overlay Program [+]
This project performs asphalt street overlays in neighborhoods and arterial streets. In the neighborhood areas, improvements will also be made to the curb, gutter, accessible ramps, and valley gutters. Streets will remain open to traffic however, during paving operations traffic will be detoured to alternate routes. The asphalt paving is continuing and nearing completion. Drivers should be alert in their travels for short street closures during paving operations.
- Concrete Rehabilitation Projects [+]
These project locations will rehabilitate aged concrete. The areas for this season are located all around the City. All areas will remain open to traffic however, drivers should expect delays. The project on Cliff Avenue from Rice Street to 6th Street is completed and the contractor is now working on Kiwanis Avenue from 18th to 41st Street. This project is expected to be fully completed by late summer.
- Phillips Avenue: 10th Street to 12th Street [+]
Phillips Avenue was totally reconstructed early this year from building front to building front during the months of April to early June.
