SANITARY LANDFILL RATES
Recommend 3.1% Increase

Statewide Tipping Fees for Municipal Solid Waste - 2009The Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill is located on 709 acres approx. 5 miles west of city limits. Waste types accepted by the Landfill include municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, appliances, used tires, yard waste, brush/wood waste, and recyclables including paper, cardboard, aluminum, scrap metal and electronics. The Landfill’s service area consists of Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner counties.

Residential free electronics recycling is available Tuesday through Saturday at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility and commercial electronics recycling is available daily at commercial vendors.

The majority of the Landfill’s revenues come from waste receipts. In addition to waste receipt revenues, the Landfill also receives income from the sale of landfill gas and carbon credits.

WHY ARE WE RAISING RATES?

Additional revenue is needed to account for increased capital equipment replacement costs and large capital improvements to expand the Landfill to responsibly bury the solid waste generated by our growing community. The projects include: Cell 3 MSW Expansion ($5,100,000), Landfill Gas Wellfield Expansion ($2,023,000), Compressor Building Expansion ($1,500,000), Landfill Closure of East MSW Area ($925,000), Leachate Pond 3 ($760,000) and Household Hazardous Waste Facility Expansion ($700,000). These projects are needed to maintain compliance with state requirements and continue to enhance operations of the Landfill Division.
