Public Works offers rebate programs for clothes washers and toilets. Replacing old, inefficent water-using devices can save thousands of gallons each year.
Clothes Washer Rebate Laundry duties rank high in the amount of water consumed per household, second only to the amount of water used in the bathroom. Using water-efficient washing machines can save 50 percent of the water required to do laundry!
In addition to water savings, the savings include energy used to heat the water and to run the appliance. Most high-efficiency washing machines feature spin cycles that leave less water in the clothing, resulting in less energy and time to dry.
The savings for a typical family can be 13,232 gallons of water or $47.76 per year in water and sewer charges by using a high-efficiency washing machine.
In addition, the washer can provide another $50.75 per year in energy savings.
These numbers indicate that over the life of the appliance, the savings will pay for the machine, even though the water-efficient clothes washing machines tend to cost significantly more than a standard top-loading clothes washer. In addition to paying for itself in water and energy savings, the City of Sioux Falls offers a rebate up to $125 toward the purchase of a qualifying washing machine.

In homes that have additional bathrooms, you can receive up to an additional $60 for the second bathroom and $50 for each additional bathroom toward the purchase and installation of conservation fixtures.
Multiple-Family Residences
(for owners of apartments, condominiums, etc.)
This rebate is good for up to $50 toward the purchase and installation toward the replacement of each existing inefficient toilet.
Rain Sensor Retrofit Program
If you have an automatic lawn irrigation system, the City encourages you to retrofit a rain sensor into your existing irrigation system. The City is offering rebates to offset your cost in installing this sensor. This device can significantly reduce the amount of water on your lawn: It shuts off your sprinklers when your lawn receives a quarter-inch of rain. Installing a rain sensor on your lawn irrigation system can:
-
Save you significant money on your water bill. While rainfall varies widely from year to year, your rain sensor has the potential to save you an estimated $100 per year on your water bill.
-
Conserve the community's drinking water supply. Lawn watering is a very significant factor in water usage, and it is often quite inefficient. What is less water wise than water sprinklers operating while rain is pouring down?
-
Reduce wear on your irrigation system because your system operates less.
-
Reduce lawn and landscaping damage due to over watering.
