Sioux Falls Human Relations Commission 2009 Humanitarian Award Nominees

Jill Stoefen-Fisher – recognized for her work with Liberian refugees and Our Savior Lutheran Church’s growing program aiding African farming cooperatives.

Sister Sheila Schnell – recognized for her work with the Hispanic community in Sioux Falls.

John McIntyre – recognized for his work with Native American youth and the National Education Association’s Human and Civil Rights Committee.

Juan Bonilla – recognized for providing a voice and leadership for the local Hispanic community; providing Spanish language publications and creating a local Hispanic radio station.

Hugh Grogan – recognized for advocating on behalf of the poor and homeless in Sioux Falls.

Theresa Kashale – recognized as a refugee who has learned to speak English and go on to become a teacher and help children whose second language is English learn how to read. She has helped immigrant and refugee families become established in schools, churches and the local society.

Joel Niemeyer – recognized for his unrelenting advocacy for people with disabilities over the past twenty years.

Barbara Sogn-Frank – recognized for generously giving of her time to help those from other cultures and for being a welcoming resource to foreign exchange students.

Dr. Margaret Devick – recognized for her work with the Lost Boys of Sudan. She has been working with project PACODES, which is helping to build a library in Panyijar.

Pastor Laura Borman – recognized for her efforts to reach out and serve the children and families of Wesley United Methodist Church’s changing neighborhood. She established the Kingdom Kids Computer Program and is the leader in the Shalom project which helps improve the quality of life for the families in the neighborhood.

Wade Gemar – recognized for his work with refugees settling in our community. He is always there for his clients, anytime day or night.

Martha Wanous – recognized for her work with the Family Immersion Center helping children whose second language is English find success.

Terry Greschke – recognized for generously giving of his time to community organizations and charities. He cares about the welfare of people and building a strong community.

Dennis Quigley – recognized for his work honoring Veterans of all cultures and promoting healing and understanding for our armed service members.
