Biography

Sue Aguilar was born and raised in the Whittier Neighborhood of Sioux Falls. She attended Franklin Elementary, Whittier Junior High, and graduated from Washington High School. Sue then went on to get her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota in 1975. Later that year, she married her husband, Rich, and they have two daughters, Jessica and Meghan.

Sue began her professional career in New York, where she held positions as a government bond trader, human resource executive, and social services administrator. In 1983, Sue and her family returned to Sioux Falls. Since that time, Sue has held leadership positions with many community organizations. In 1997, Sue chaired the citizen, lead organization that passed the School District’s Capital Improvement Bond, resulting in the upgrade of the deteriorating elementary schools as well as improvements to every school building in the district. Following this endeavor Sue was elected to serve on the Sioux Falls School Board.

Sue’s other community leadership roles include serving as a member and officer of the Board of Directors of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. She is a past president of the League of Women Voters of Sioux Falls, the League of Women Voters of South Dakota, and the Junior League of Sioux Falls. She was chair of the Southeast Technical Institute Housing Foundation and is presently Community Impact Division Chair for the Sioux Empire United Way. She is former president of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. She has also chaired the Sioux Falls City PATH Committee and was a School District liaison to the Sioux Empire Homeless Coalition. Sue has served as executive director of the HELP!Line Center and interim director of the Alzheimer's Association.
