Refuse Storage

Item 39 Refuse Storage 1 point

Proper storage and disposal of garbage and refuse are necessary to minimize odors, insects, and rodents. Improperly handled garbage creates nuisance conditions, makes housekeeping difficult, and may contaminate food, equipment, and utensils.

Garbage containers must be maintained in good repair and should be available where garbage is generated.

Storage areas for garbage and refuse containers must be constructed so that they can be thoroughly cleaned to avoid creating a harborage for insects and rodents.

Outside receptacles must have a tight-fitting lid or cover to prevent the scattering of the garbage or refuse, breeding of flies, or the entry of rodents.

Areas for the storage of recyclables must meet the same requirements for garbage and refuse.
