Homeowner Mosquito Control Methods

There are a large variety of products on the market today for homeowners to use to protect themselves from mosquitoes or other insects. Each product may contain unique chemicals or agents that provide different levels of protection and very different methods of application. Some products contain mostly natural ingredients of relatively low toxicity while others contain some amount of pesticides as their active ingredient.

All pesticides have some inherent risk associated with them and must be used properly and according to label directions if they are going to provide a reasonable level of safe and effective protection. In evaluating the risk that a pesticide is likely to pose to humans, the EPA conducts studies and considers not only how toxic the substance is but also how much of it an organism is exposed to before any adverse effects are noted. Both of these factors affect whether or not a pesticide or product will be approved for a specific use. Persons whose immune systems may be weakened due to specific health conditions or those with other health problems should take special precautions and ask their health care professionals about any special concerns they might have prior to product use at their residence.
