At 4 p.m. on December 21, 2017, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire at 3209 South Hawthorne Ave.

Upon investigation, crews encountered a small fire toward the rear of home, with light smoke damage throughout the structure. Crews conducted a primary and secondary search of the home and confirmed that all residents had evacuated safely. SFFR personnel extinguished the fire in approximately ten minutes. Fire crews immediately established ventilation to remove remaining smoke, and simultaneously removed a small portion of the exterior siding and soffit to confirm there were no concealed hot spots or fire extension into the attic.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. The American Red Cross was notified and offered assistance to the residents.

SFFR responded with 18 personnel, 4 fire trucks, and 2 support vehicles. The fire’s cause is still under investigation.

SFFR would like to thank the Sioux Falls Police Department, Paramedics Plus, Xcel Energy, MidAmerican Energy, and the American Red Cross for their assistance

The home did not have a residential sprinkler system. SFFR would like to remind residents to have working smoke detectors and a practiced escape plan in the event of a fire emergency.
