Police Department Receives COPS Grant Funding for Three New Officers
A grant application through the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) was recently approved, and the Sioux Falls Police Department will receive funding for three new officers. The grant total is $375,000 over three years.
In the 2018 budget, the City Council approved funding for four new officers. With this grant, there will be a total of seven new officers in 2018. When these new positions are filled, 46 Police positions will have been added since 2010.
“The Sioux Falls Police Department has been fortunate to receive funding for several officers through the COPS grant over the years,” said Police Chief Matt Burns. “Adding additional officers through both the budget and this grant will allow us to better respond to the increase in police calls over the last few years and work in even broader ways to engage our community.”
The department has received funding for 15 officers through the COPS grant over the past six years.
