Sioux Falls Municipal Band

SPECIAL PERFORMANCE:

Martha Stai — June 24

After her remarkable debut with the band last summer, we are excited to welcome back local theater star, Martha Stai!

When she is not teaching her high school students the difference between adjectival and adverbial clauses, Martha Stai loves to create theatre and music. Some of her most memorable roles include: The Narrator in Joseph..., Penny Pennywise in Urinetown, Eve/Mama Noah in Children of Eden, and The Baker's Wife in Into the Woods. She was most recently seen in the Bare Bodkins production of Macbeth, and Mary Poppins, at the Sioux Empire Community Theatre, in which she perfected her posture and flying ability. You will love Martha’s beautiful voice and sense of musical style!

SPECIAL PERFORMANCE:

Dan Goeller — July 15

On July 15, we will be performing a new work written to celebrate the upcoming 100th anniversary year of the Sioux Falls Municipal Band!  Spirit of the Falls is an aural portrait of the history and culture of Sioux Falls. The sound of rushing water is a metaphor for the joyful bustle of modern life, while the tranquil aesthetic of stiller waters reminds us of the importance of living in concert with the land. Although the culture of the inhabitants surrounding the falls–and their ways of life–have dramatically changed over the centuries, the spirit of the falls reminds us that we are united in our humanity.

SPECIAL PERFORMANCE:

JAS — July 22

It is an honor to perform with the amazing JAS quintet! JAS incorporates tradition with evolution and features some of the finest jazz musicians in the region: Joel Shotwell—saxes, Jim Speirs—trumpet, Andrew Reinartz—bass, Daniel Heier—drums, and Jeff Paul—piano. The ensemble recently released a debut album entitled Leap Year Baby. Bassist Andrew Reinartz explains, “It’s an instrumental album from a jazz tradition, but really a wide variety of tunes. We go from straight-ahead minor blues tunes, to funk, to a tune based on a Gregorian chant form.” The work appeals to a wide range of audiences and includes feature solo performances from each band member. During concerts the JAS Quintet regularly includes jazz staples from the greats like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and others, including many original compositions. The flexibility of these fine musicians along with two of our own fine musicians of the Sioux Falls Municipal Band, will make this a night to remember!
