Stone Walkways & Stairs

Due to deteriorating condition, maintenance needs and safety concerns the stone walkways and stairs on the terraces would be removed.  To respect history concrete walkways in the proposed Flowering Tree Garden would include a salvaged quartzite cobblestone border.  On terraces quartzite would be salvaged and from one set of stairs reconstructed to exact historical standards but on a concrete foundation intended to last into the future.  The balance of stairs reconstructed within the park would primarily be concrete but with stone treads and metal handrails, constructed in areas of necessity for primary park circulation and connectivity.  These would occur on the terraces between the proposed picnic shelter and the band shell and also would occur between the Lion’s Den and east entrance to the Japanese Garden.
