Temporary Sign Permits

Temporary Signs

There are several types of temporary signs allowed by the City of Sioux Falls: portable, inflatable, banners and pennants.

Portable signs are allowed at commercial locations for a maximum of 60 days per calendar year. A separate permit is required for each sign. There is a time limit of 15 day or 30 day permits, with the sign required to be down for a minimum time after the sign is removed. Portable signs may not exceed 32 square feet and must be secured against overturning.

Inflatable Inflatable signs are allowed at commercial locations for a maximum of 60 days per calendar year and include high-flying helium, ground and roof inflatable signs. A separate permit is required for each sign. Permits are for a seven (7) day period. Inflatable signs are required to be cabled or tethered to be secured against overturning.

Banners are allowed at commercial locations for a maximum of 100 square feet. They may only be placed on the wall of a building or between the supports on an existing free-standing sign. Banners do not have a time limit, however, they are allowed for grand opening and special sales ONLY, not as business identification signs. Banners do not require a permit to be issued, however, there are several areas in the City where they are not permitted. Please check with the Zoning Division prior to hanging the banner.
