Sioux Falls Regional and Local Resources
  • City of Sioux Falls Water Daily Pumping Summary and Big Sioux Waterflow Monitoring. How much water do the residents and businesses of Sioux Falls utilize? What is the water flow at various USGS reporting stations in the Big Sioux River around Sioux Falls?    
  • East Dakota Water Development District.EDWDD is one of seven water development districts in the state. EDWDD consists of all of Grant, Codington, Deuel, Hamlin, Brookings, Kingsbury, Lake, Moody, and Minnehaha Counties, the eastern half of Miner County, the eastern half of Day County, and that portion of the City of Sioux Falls that is located in Lincoln County.   
  • Lewis and Clark Rural Water System. The Lewis and Clark Rural Water System was formed to provide clean and plentiful water to over 200,000 people and to develop alternative water supplies for these people who have very few options with their current water source.   
  • South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts Watershed Planning and Development Project. The South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts Watershed Planning and Assistance Project aids selected landowners and operators with the development and funding of land management practices. These practices benefit their operation while improving the quality of the water in South Dakota rivers, lakes and streams.   
  • South Dakota Association of Rural Water Systems. The South Dakota Association of Rural Water Systems is the only water and wastewater association monitoring legislation in both Pierre and Washington, DC. They also provide numerous training opportunities and technical expertise.   
  • South Dakota State University Water Resources Institute. The mission of the Water Resources Institute at South Dakota State University is to provide the leadership in coordinating the research and training at South Dakota State University and other affiliated educational institutions and agencies across the state in the broad area of water resources.   
  • Big Sioux Water Festival. The goal of the Water Festival is to provide children an opportunity to apply water education knowledge learned in the classroom to "real life" problem solving situations by providing a multi-topic, interdisciplinary one-day water "science fair" in hope of contributing to future behavioral changes.

  • United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Map. The National Map will be a seamless, continuously maintained set up of public domain geographic base information that will serve as a foundation for integrating, sharing, and using other data easily and consistently. Check out The National Map viewer and the rest of the website for information about the Big Sioux River Basin, or any other area in the United States.    
  • United States Geological Survey (USGS) Water Resources of South Dakota. The USGS Water Resources of South Dakota website has numerous links to other USGS water related websites, including real time and historical streamflow information.   
  • United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Streamflow Information Program. The USGS National Streamflow Information Program website provides historical, current, and near real-time streamflow data and information.

  • Disaster Portal Focuses on Live Maps. A new Disaster Portal focusing on disaster prevention and relief is now available from the United States federal government. The portal is designed to assist victims of disasters, such as flooding, in locating the resources the need.   
  • Earth Satellite Corporation (EarthSat) Flooding Weather Services. EarthSat's flooding weather services website provides information on flood response, planning, and mitigation tools.   
  • EnviroMapper - United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Go to the EnviroMapper Storefront, to access a variety of water and other environmental data sets.   
  • Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration (FIMA). The Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration (FIMA) manages the National Flood Insurance Program and oversees FEMA's mitigation programs.   
  • National Drought Mitigation Center. The National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) helps people and institutions develop and implement measures to reduce societal vulnerability to drought. Their website provides information on drought planning, monitoring, mitigating, and understanding.   
  • National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service. The Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service provides accurate and informative forecast products. The magnitude and uncertainty of occurrence of floods or droughts, from hours to days and months, are displayed in advance of the actual event.   
  • Safe Drinking Water Act - Protecting America's Public Health. Do you know what the Safe Drinking Water Act does for you and the environment?   
  • Spatial Hazard Events and Losses Database for the United States (SHELDUS). SHELDUS is a georeferenced data set providing county-level data on natural hazard events and losses from 1960 to 2000. Eighteen different hazard types are covered, and can be queried by date, location, event type, and loss.
