City Announces New Housing Board in Partnership With Minnehaha County
The City of Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County have formed the Accessible Housing Advisory Board, a new committee focused on developing housing solutions in the greater Sioux Falls area.
This group replaces the City’s Affordable Housing Advisory Board and the Minnehaha County-led Homeless Advisory Board. The main goal of combining both groups is to boost collaboration by bringing local leaders, school board officials, law enforcement, and citizens to the same table.
The board will meet monthly to advise the governing bodies in Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County. Its top priorities will include the creation of affordable housing, housing stabilization services, and alleviating homelessness.
“In the past, our City and county housing boards ran in parallel with each other,” Chellee Unruh, Housing Manager, said. “This new board will focus its collaborative efforts on solving local housing issues. Our core ideals will remain the same, such as helping our homeless find a permanent home.”
Board membership will comprise of six members from local government leaders and five citizens:
- A member of the Sioux Falls City Council to be appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council.
- A member of the Minnehaha County commission to be appointed by the Minnehaha County commission chair and approved by the Minnehaha County commission.
- A member of the Lincoln County commission to be appointed by the Lincoln County commission chair and approved by the Lincoln County commission.
- A member of the Sioux Falls School District board to be appointed by the school board president.
- Housing Manager with the City of Sioux Falls.
- A member of the Minnehaha County staff to be recommended by the director of health and human services and approved by the Minnehaha County commission chair.
- Five citizens at-large who must be residents of the city of Sioux Falls.
