Deadline Extended to Apply for the City Districting Commission
The City Council is seeking volunteers to serve on the Districting Commission for the purpose of adjusting City Council district boundaries. Five members will be appointed by the Council: one member each from the Southwest, Southeast, Northwest, Northeast, and Central Districts of the City. All applicants must be registered voters, live in the district for which they apply to represent, and may not be serving on any other City boards or commissions. The deadline to apply has been extended by one week to 5 p.m. on Friday, November 13, 2020.
“The redistricting process is essential to ensuring equal representation among the City’s five Council Districts,” said Greg Neitzert, Chair of the City Council. “This past month has been a busy one for everyone, so we’re extending the deadline to give applicants a little more time to get their applications in. It’s a great opportunity to serve the City and have a long-lasting impact; all those interested are strongly encouraged to apply.”
A Districting Commission is required to adjust Council districts after each decennial census; census results are expected next spring. Applications to the Commission will be reviewed by members of the City Council and appointments are expected to be made in early December. The Commission will convene in 2021 to develop and submit a Districting Plan to the City Council by mid-July 2021. Most of the Commission’s work will take place in late spring once census figures are released.
Applications are available online through the City Council webpage at www.siouxfalls.org/council or by contacting the City Clerk’s Office at 367-8080 or clerks@siouxfalls.org. The Office of the City Clerk is located in Carnegie Town Hall at 235 West Tenth Street.
