“Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responds to approximately three lift assist calls every day to help an individual who has fallen and needs assistance,” said Ryan Cox, Community Risk Reduction Coordinator for Sioux Falls Fire Rescue. “Our goal is to work together with other agencies to hopefully prevent these types of incidents that could lead to a serious or debilitating injury.”

Falls are not just a consequence of aging, as individuals under age 65 have reported injuries from falls that required them to limit regular activities including work and require them to visit a provider for treatment.

“Our 2022 Community Health Assessment revealed that the fall death rate in Minnehaha County is more than double the national rate,” said Shelby Kommes, Public Health Prevention Coordinator for the Sioux Falls Health Department. “Connecting with the community to provide fall risk screenings and implementing evidence-based prevention programs are important to reducing fall injuries and deaths in Sioux Falls.”

Additional events are planned for the week. For more information on the week’s activities, visit livewellsiouxfalls.org.
