Terrace Park Master Plan
In 2014 the Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation Department completed a master planning process to identify improvements for the ‘upper’ portion of Terrace Park, located generally between West Fourth Street and West Second Street. Through a public input process, park needs were determined and a proposed master plan was developed to commemorate and recognize the nearly 100 years of park history and enhance recreational value to the Terrace Park neighborhood and community.
From public input received, the favorite use areas in Terrace Park are the historic terraces, picnic space, performance space and historic structures. Passive recreations uses such as walking, dog walking, picnicking, sightseeing, photography and fishing are the primary reasons reported for visiting Terrace Park with gardens and band shell performances also receiving significant mention. Opportunities for improvement include enhanced historical aspects and features, stronger entry conditions, better lighting, garden improvements, additional seating areas and overall pedestrian circulation connectivity within the park.
Confluence, a regional landscape architecture, planning and urban design firm developed the master plan and associated cost estimate. The master plan was approved by the Parks & Recreation Board, and funding for construction of the project was incorporated into the Capital Improvement Program. The project is scheduled to be constructed in phases beginning in 2020.
