Electronics Recycling

Why Recycle Electronics?

Effective May 4, 2004, a City of Sioux Falls ordinance banned electronics from the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill because they often contain amounts of heavy metals and harmful chemicals, such as lead and cadmium, which can compromise the effectiveness of landfill liners. Additionally, various components of electronics can be reused in newer technologies or recycled. Roughly 21,000 pounds of electronics are recycled in Sioux Falls at the HHW Facility each week.

Things to Consider

Many companies are willing to accept returned appliances and electronics that are no longer wanted. We would like to encourage you to investigate other outlets for electronics recycling by researching the product brand name’s website to see if they offer a recycling program.

These services are only available to residences. Businesses or residents with questions can contact the Sustainability Program office for more information regarding electronics recycling.

How Does the Program Work?

  1. This free service is available to individual residents of Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner counties. The facility does NOT accept waste from organizations such as businesses, farms, nonprofit organizations, churches, schools, and governmental entities, or waste that appears to be from any of the abovementioned.
  2. Make sure the materials you wish to recycle are accepted at the HHW Facility. We can only accept five items per vehicle. (Note: A computer unit; CPU, monitor, keyboard, and mouse is considered one item).
  3. Drive under the awning on the east side of the HHW Facility and the staff will unload your electronics for you.
  4. Any unaccepted items or containers used to carry your electronics will need to be taken home with you for reuse or disposal.
