Successful Week of Construction at Main Pump Station
January 14: The City of Sioux Falls Public Works Department had a successful week of construction at the Main Pump Station construction site at Rice Street and Bahnson Avenue. The new station will replace the existing 40-year-old Brandon Road Pump Station, which handles approximately 90 percent of the city’s wastewater.
Construction crews had the herculean task of pouring the station’s foundation. It involved pouring 870 cubic yards of 6,000 PSI concrete over 14 straight hours, the equivalent of one concrete truck about every nine minutes.
The facility will be able to process up to 65 million gallons of wastewater per day, with room to expand to 90 million gallons a day. It will be built above the 500-year flood plain elevation to mitigate future flooding risks. The two-year $24.4 million project is anticipated to be completed by fall 2021.
