Unity Bridge

Project Summary 

  • The project encompasses Sixth Street from the Big Sioux River to Weber Avenue.
  • The project will reconstruct the bridge, update underground utilities, feature new streetscaping, and construct rail crossing elements for future whistle reduction zone.

Project Update 4/1/2024  

  • Construction has moved east of the bridge where the street and curb paving are underway.
  • Starting April 5, access to LSS and Cherapa will be from the west (Phillips Ave.)
  • The greenway bike trail will remain closed until late spring.
  • 6th Street will be closed from LSS/Cherapa to Weber Ave for completion of the rail crossing, utilities, and street.

Construction of bridge barriers, planters, approaches, railing, and piers are wrapping up. Work under the bridge near the greenway trail is still underway. The final aesthetic elements on the bridge will be finished later this spring.

Commuter Route Information: 

  • On April 5, Access to LSS and Cherapa II will switch to 6th Street via Phillips Ave over the new bridge.
  • 6th Street is closed to through traffic and pedestrians from Phillips Ave to Weber Ave.
  • Access to the Harvester Building and Raven will be maintained via 6th Street from Phillips Ave.
  • The River Greenway Recreation Trail, along the east bank of the Big Sioux River, will remain closed from Eighth Street to the Falls Park entrance on Weber Avenue. The detour follows a route west of the Big Sioux River through downtown and along Phillips Avenue into Falls Park.
